zukrassverliebt – Rosarot (2024)

The brainchild of father-son duo, Manuel and Michael Mentz, the German-based band zukrassverliebt was a tool for finding the balance between life stressors and emotional solace during the pandemic. A source of bonding, relief and hope, zukrassverliebt began creating music in 2021 (give or take), but their debut single was released this year. Following the well-received debut ‘Tränen der Freude’ and sophomore ‘Ich denk an dich’, the most recent addition to their discography is ‘Rosarot’.

Inspired by human connection, each single delves into the complexities of love and loss. Google Translate is never entirely accurate, but the English translation of ‘Rosarot’ is “pink” and, personally, I believe it is the perfect title for this emotional song. Associated with romance, pink and red are powerful colours capturing the bloom of love, the passion of lust, and the raging adoration of true besottedness, as is the theme of ‘Rosarot’. zukrassverliebt explain:

“I wrote the song ‘Rosarot’ when I had just fallen in love. With the production, I want to convey the positive feeling of pulsating restlessness particularly well. A feeling that most people know, remember fondly and many long for again.”

While one might consider ‘Rosarot’ to be a vintage synth-driven 80s pop tune with tinges of Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys, the single easily falls alongside modern-day indie-pop/synth-pop tunes. A shimmering silver thread transcends time and generations, taking contemporary audiences back 40 years while bringing older listeners to the 21st century.

One of the more interesting elements of ‘Rosarot’ is how it incorporates synthetic and organic aspects in the melody. A strong synth backing with bold beats inserts a wave of electronic tones and the vocals offer an organic rawness, however, just as they are layered, there is a fusion weaving raw vulnerability into complex synth confidence. Bold but shy, confident but subdued, restless but soothing, ‘Rosarot’ elegantly captures the essence of new love.
