Zorastead – True Words (2021)
With the first single off their album Inner Rails, Zorastead delves into introspective lyrics and intimate confessions. ‘True Words’ is not a typical love song as it focuses on the denial of love and silence. The pounding movements of the melody exquisitely lead you to a confession and the idea of not needing to say true words about love and experiencing the emotion inside yourself.
This introspection and confession comes from the passionate love for music of a school teacher and a secretary bored with her job. After meeting on a foggy evening just before the pandemic, they connected through a flow of pop-rock emotions. Drawing on influences ranging from Linkin Park to The Cranberries, they add a touch of their own consciousness to create something truly spectacular.
The piano line that opens ‘True Words’ leads you effortlessly into the single. There is something in the piano that hooks into your brain and will not let up. While relatively minimalistic, the opening flow of the melody is utterly addictive. The sweep of higher tones that ripple over the piano is an intriguing inclusion. Every aspect of the musical arrangement beckons you further into the song and leads you along the lyrics. There is a sense of building in the lower levels of the single through the strings and ripples that explodes in the last moments of the track. The song has a rather epic feeling to the movement that is wonderful to listen to.
The building of the melody allows the vocals to really shine. There is a poetic feeling to the lyrics as they pull you into a confession. Through the vocals, you are drawn into the musings of the band on the topic of love. While there is a touch of yearning for an endless affection, there is also a sense of trepidation. This combines with the melody to lead you to the confession of the lyrics and the feeling of wanting a different path to love.
Zorastead takes a very different approach to love in ‘True Words’. Through the rather poetic lyrics, they lead you to a confession regarding the denial of love and the want to find a different path. This is bolstered by the building movement of the melody that hooks you and leads you through the single.
