Track of the Day: Ziggy Alberts – circus

Reminiscent of Jack Johnson and Ed Sheeran, Australian singer-songwriter Ziggy Alberts shares a soft, smooth and flowing sound with the masses. If you think you know the name Ziggy Alberts, then it’s possible you know of his seven records, international tours (all sold out), features on Billboard Magazine or his independent label Commonfolk Records. If you haven’t heard of him before, don’t worry you’re reading about him now and that’s what counts! We have the honour of sharing his single ‘circus’ as our Track of the Day.

This is not the first time we have come across Alberts having reviewed his single ‘Heartbeat’ in January (read our review here) and we thought he was cracking then. Has our opinion changed in the past eight months? Off his recent album searching for freedom, we have the charming single ‘circus’ – an acoustic track with a poignant simplicity in its enchanting tone. I talk about the “beauty of simplicity” and Alberts has nailed it with this song.

While the fusion of guitar and piano results in an intoxicating melody, it is the execution of the lyricism that really captures me. According to Alberts, the album searching for freedom is “…an expression of an adventure that I’ve realised will last a lifetime” and ‘circus’ is an intimate insight into the adventure called life. Using a personal narrative, Alberts pours out his heart touching on universal topics of love and relationships – a yearning to be reunited with a loved one amidst the chaos of reality. Elegant and sophisticated but with a tentative fragility, Ziggy Alberts’ ‘circus’ is anthemic and bold in a rather simple, soft way. I love it!
