Zeta Zeroes – 11:01 (2022)
The brainchild of US-based singer-songwriter Bill R., Zeta Zeroes is a mishmash of punk and metal. Described as a “metalhead to his core since discovering Metallica at 12 years old”, Zeta Zeroes brings us the sounds of yesteryear with a contemporary edginess. Initially conceived over a decade ago, Zeta Zeroes was officially formed by multi-instrumentalist Bill R. in 2021 and began releasing music in 2022. Featured in blogs like We Write About Music, Red Rock Magazine, Rising Artists Blog, Rock Era Magazine and various playlists, Zeta Zeroes is quickly building a universal following.
Described by Edgar Allan Poets as an artist that stands out from the group with music that has its own personality (I paraphrase), this one-man band has a unique style to share with the masses. Hot on the heels of his well-received single ‘Toxic Rob’, Zeta Zeroes releases his four-track debut EP 11:01. Ranging from the more pop-punk-inspired ‘Thank You, Westerfield Bros & Co’ to the hardcore punk song ‘Toxic Rob’, 11:01 is not for the faint-hearted.
Recorded with progressive metal artist Moon Machine and veteran producer Jack Control, 11:01 has an individualistic quality while retaining the core of punk rock music. Opening with the blistering fast ‘The New Influence’, Zeta Zeroes establishes himself as a powerful punk rock meets metal force of nature – a tone that is evident through the full EP. Yet, while his forcefulness is, well, pretty much in your face at the beginning, the contemporary edginess slowly infiltrates his sound with lighter pop-punk musings. In fact, ‘Thank You, Westerfield Bros & Co’ retains the abrupt punk design but with a nod to 90s acts like Sum 41.
Just as powerful as the melodic arrangements, Zeta Zeroes is hard-hitting in his lyricism. Hitting on concepts like climate change, manic sociopolitical issues and 21st-century culture, 11:01 might border on provocative. Yet, there is a sense of nostalgia, fun, light-heartedness and upbeat optimism throughout the EP showcasing Zeta Zeroes’ innovation.
