ZADAR – Julie (2022)

Two years ago, we had a chat with the US-based artist ZADAR where he told us about his musical inspiration, now I bet we could say that ZADAR inspires other artists to create beautiful music. Featured not only on The Other Side Reviews but also Less Than 1000 Followers, Stereo Stickman and various playlists, ZADAR has been turning heads across the blogosphere. Come with us as we dip our toes (metaphorically speaking) into his latest single ‘Julie’.

Influenced by the likes of New Order, The Sisters of Mercy and The Cure, ZADAR brings a contemporary gothic edginess take on old-school post-punk. Working in collaboration with producer James Sinclair-Stott and multi-instrumentalist Antonio G. (also known as ZADAR), ‘Julie’ is a bittersweet tale of love and loss. This talented singer-songwriter shares that “this song was originally written for someone I was once very fond. I contemplated for a while whether I should even release this track at all because of the meaning it once held and the bittersweet feeling it brings me…” – a relatable emotion for all of those who have loved and lost. Yet, it is not only the poetic lyricism that turns heads but also the intimate melodic connection with audiences.

Following his well-received track ‘Crimson Pain’ (released in 2021), ‘Julie’ is ZADAR’s first single in 2022. Reminiscent of The Cure, the combination of synths, guitar and drums brings a hazy ambience to the soundscape. The vocals have a uniqueness as it appears to be a spoken word song with gothic undertones; however, the catchy chorus has an upbeat sing-along sound to it. Twirling about with a giddy smile on my face, I feel a sense of calm overtake me with ‘Julie’, but the melancholic vocal execution hits me in the chest with a sense of desperation – bittersweet, I dare say.

Sincere, sentimental and obscure, ZADAR weaves a bittersweet sonic tapestry with his new single ‘Julie’.
