Zack Fowler – SOS (2023)
If Blink 182 were to have a lovechild with Machine Gun Kelly, the chances are the kid would be Zack Fowler. Raising one eyebrow with a cheeky grin and a larger-than-life zeal, UK-based Fowler captures the essence of old-school pop-punk. This is my introduction to Zack Fowler, but he has already turned heads of audiences and notable publications. From Roadie Metal to Rock Noticias, Metal Plant Music and Music & Fashion Blog, he is garnering a following on a global scale. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘SOS’.
Following his well-received debut single ‘drunk text’, ‘SOS’ is the first release from Fowler in 2023. Leaning toward the pop-punk/pop-rock sounds of the 90s, ‘SOS’ has a forceful energy flowing through the toe-tapping melody. Upbeat and hard-hitting, Fowler hits you between the eyes with this sophomore single. As with ‘drunk text’ and the successive single ‘2k’, this naturally talented musician bowls us over with passionate melodies and heartfelt lyricism.
Brash, abrupt and blindingly bold, ‘SOS’ is an in-your-face expression of frustration, angst and aggressive vulnerability. Penned as a tale of an anxiety-ridden party animal who eventually snaps to destroy his inner demons, the single is personal and intimate for Fowler. Diagnosed with ADHD, Fowler faces the challenges of being a little too much to handle but experiences despair and confusion beneath the rough exterior. When speaking about the cathartic ‘SOS’, he explains that it “is about a shell of a party life providing dopamine but inside trying to escape from it all…a cry for help that wasn’t heard over the noise of the party.”
Comparable to a shot of vodka followed by a Jägermeister chaser, Zack Fowler takes your breath away with his new single ‘SOS’. Fortunately, his music doesn’t leave you with a dreadful hangover, just that shock of experiencing something completely intoxicating.
