Zachary Mason – I Wish Humans Were Made In A Factory (2025)

As an “avid fan of all kinds of music”, singer-songwriter Zachary Mason aims to blend various styles into his experimental sonic concoction. With slicks of rock from indie-rock to 90s pop-rock – all bound by a nostalgic but modern-day aura – Mason’s tunes appeal to several audiences from different generations. For over a decade, he has composed and created over 200 original demos, and today we’re introduced to his more recent offerings. Join us as we delve into his single, ‘I Wish Humans Were Made In A Factory’.

Following his well-received single, ‘Fathers’, Mason saunters into 2025 with his new single ‘I Wish Humans Were Made In A Factory’ – both a shortened and original four-minute (ish) version. A nostalgic brush of 90s indie-rock and grunge, the new single oozes a sort of dark grittiness, but with a kaleidoscopic flutter glimmering in the grungy roughness. Joined by bassist John Thomasson (Little Big Town), the melodic combination of a bold bass matches dynamic guitars and pounding drums; however, just as the dark melody is harmonic, a distorted element offers each instrument individual prominence highlighting its position, the musician’s natural talent, and Mason’s originality.

As I mentioned, there is darkness lingering in the melody – an uncomfortable tug at your heart and breathtaking melancholy. Yet, the blackness you might consider engulfing is sprinkled with humour, brightness, and a fun, smile-inducing attitude. Mason explains:

“This track… has a playful, humorous theme and catchy vocal lines… suggesting that humans may be better off being produced in a factory in order to avoid certain tensions and conflicts that often occur as a result of the traditional method of reproduction…”

Not necessarily sincere nor sentimental, but with raw humanity interwoven in the moving lyrics, ‘I Wish Humans Were Made In Factory’ charmingly explores the complexities of reality. As I mentioned, this is my introduction to the UK-based Mason, and while the memories of Radiohead already make him popular (at least to me), I am eager to hear more to create happy memories of Zachary Mason.
