Zach Bailey – When I Was With You (2023)
While singer-songwriter Zach Bailey’s discography might not be extensive (at least according to Spotify), the sophistication of his music speaks to several years of experience. In 2021, he crossed our ears with the single ‘Corner of the Universe’ with its tender stripped-back acoustic tone, and we are not the only ones who succumbed to his charms. With his confident stage presence, moving melodies, and even co-hosting a weekly songwriter’s open mic at The Silverlake Lounge, the US-based musician piques people’s interest keeping them coming back for more. The latest addition to Bailey’s repertoire is the single ‘When I Was With You’.
Following the well-received single ‘Tough Guy’, ‘When I Was With You’ is Zach Bailey’s second single in 2023. Recorded and produced with Gal Petel at Petel’s home studio, Hatuka Studios, ‘When I Was With You’ continues Bailey’s dip into electronic pop. A couple of years ago with ‘Corner of the Universe’, Bailey embraced a softer folk tune; however, this evolution or perhaps an experiment with new sounds showcases his versatility as an artist. Moreover, ‘When I Was With You’ leans toward electropop but there is a shimmer of soul lurking in the foundation further showcasing Bailey’s innovative skills.
Upbeat and warm with a toe-tapping charm, ‘When I Was With You’ lifts you into a swirl of joyful kaleidoscopic music. Interestingly, the song has a feeling of empowerment and hope but explores human fragility within the complex realm of relationships. Zach Bailey explains:
“I wrote the song the week after my last relationship ended. Although it was for the best, I wanted to express all the ways that through the relationship I became a better person.”
Miserable and melancholic, a sliver of vulnerability peeks through in Bailey’s vocals. Yet, despite the turmoil of an ending relationship, the melody and his dulcet tones scream acceptance, growth, self-discovery and optimism. Listening to ‘When I Was With You’ can have you lost in the sonic whirlpool, but Bailey slips his hand into yours as you find solace, comfort and hopeful positivity.
