Zacariiah – Waterslide (2022)

Influenced by artists like Twenty One Pilots, Odd Future, Glass Animals and Tame Impala, one would assume Zacariiah has an indie-rock meets indie-pop sound – and you would be right. While this is my introduction to the solo artist, this US-based singer-songwriter has received acclaim from Clout, Roadie Music and various radio stations. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Waterslide’.

Described by Clout as an artist was a “…uniquely cutting sound…”, Zacariiah is difficult to be pigeon-holed. Following his track ‘Geronimo’, ‘Waterslide’ adopts an eclectic style merging elements of RnB and soul with tinges of pop. A song suited to modern-day audiences, there is a toe-tapping light-hearted vibe; however, the lush vocals and instrumentation lean toward old-school RnB. One aspect I find intriguing is how the melody moves from an upbeat tempo to a much slower, lagging pace showcasing his versatility as an artist. It is this that really turned my head.

A collaborative tune arranged in Indianapolis with the audio engineer who mixed for Gucci Mane, ‘Waterslide’ is an almost indescribable flavour of sonic beauty. Inspired by life in its entirety, the track is “…about being with someone new and not being sure where it’s going or how long it’ll last” – a theme aptly expressed through the dreamscape rollercoaster. Sophisticated and inimitable, Zacariiah touches on human fragility and vulnerability in the new single ‘Waterslide’
