Yousaf – Bottom of the Pot (2024)

Music is often a cathartic tool for self-expression, self-discovery and just dealing with difficult situations. Creative outlets are perfect for capturing the challenges within, so writing a song and playing a melody is brilliant to let it all out. Mental health awareness is a common theme for various artists, both mainstream and independent, with a focus on personal narratives. The thing is, just as people share what they are experiencing, songwriters also look from an objective perspective. A physician with over a decade of clinical experience might put on objective glasses while clinging to harmonic sympathy. Enter Yousaf.

No stranger to performance for health’s sake, US-based Yousaf took the stage as Dr Pop in Drs Bop ‘n’ Pop – an educational show promoting safety and healthy habits for children during the Covid-19 pandemic. Today, he piques our interest by picking up a guitar and voicing tales of mental health awareness and the emotional effects. Releasing his debut single ‘Bottom of the Pot’, Yousaf taps into the end of relationships, feelings of isolation, loss and despair. He explains:

“I am using my guitar and voice to tell stories about difficult topics that affect our mental health and well-being… this song is about moving on after loss, breakups and divorce.”

A nostalgic whisper of Radiohead and The Cranberries clipped with the warmth of James Bay, ‘Bottom of the Pot’ draws together familiar beats in a contemporary style. As with Radiohead, an intimate profoundness lies with the melody and lyrics; in this case, the trials revolve around loss and its tragic effects. Yet, while the content is heartbreaking in its poignant theme, the warmth of Yousaf’s vocals adds a comforting hug in a swirl of emotional chaos.

Sincere, sentimental and introspective, Yousaf finds a line between chaos and comfort in the intricate ‘Bottom of the Pot’. If this is his debut single, I wait in anticipation for more from the talented musician.

In addition to the single, Yousaf has released an official lyric video for ‘Bottom of the Pot’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
