Young Fatigue – Am I Pretty Now? (2021)
Body image is something that a lot of people struggle with as society demands more and more for people to be deemed beautiful. Young Fatigue is hitting out at this with the grungy tones of ‘Am I Pretty Now?’. Through the hard-hitting lyrics, they tackle the mental and psychical torment many put themselves through to meet the unattainable beauty standards set by society.
While the single brings a sense of discomfort, there is also a pure feeling of liberation as the band releases all the emotions linked to body image. The single continues the band’s moulding of the discontent felt in the world into catchy songs. While only their second single, it shows that the band is willing to hit out at concepts and ideals that are deeply ingrained into all of us.
‘Am I Pretty Now?’ grabs you with the guitar opening and pulls you into a thrashing good time. There is a passion in the melody that rushes through your veins before dropping for the verses. While there is a dip, the guitars continue to ooze their passion into your brain. There is a touch of anger in the melody as it bounces against the boundaries placed on us by society. You really want to jump around and go a little crazy as you listen.
The vocals bring another touch of grunge to the music with an infusion of pop-punk. The lyrics wonderfully articulate the disdain the band has for the body standards being forced on people by society. The really catchy performance has you wanting to shout out with the band on the chorus. In the verses, they bring the negative emotions that people feel into the light before telling you that you can let all of this go on the chorus. It is a really motivating anthemic track that has you wanting to leave every societal expectation on the roadside.
Young Fatigue hit out at body images and society with the anthemic rush of the hard-hitting single ‘Am I Pretty Now?’. The single is a pulse of anger, aggression and disdain that fills you with the desire to run from what society wants you to do. It is a great track that walks the line of protest and empowerment.
