Young Astronaut – The Room Beneath My Skin (2022)
Being true to yourself is often easier said than done when placed against the constant pressure to conform that fills society. This is something that Young Astronaut has picked up and woven into ‘The Room Beneath My Skin’. Through the hypnotic verses and orchestral chorus, the single offers an open commentary on the challenge of being true and the path of good intentions.
The third single from their upcoming EP, the single showcases what we can expect from this duo. Formed in 2012 by brothers Pete (keys, guitar) and Chris Boakes (vocals, guitar), they were joined by Paul Meeson (bass) and Alex Esp (bass). Together, they have toured across the UK and internationally, while hitting various genres from folk to rock with their previously released full-length albums.
The light progressive tones that open ‘The Room Beneath My Skin’ has a slightly chilled vibe that makes the burst of drums more powerful. Those light tones continue to make their way through the soundscape in the high levels while the drums vibrate through your chest. This layering is wonderful and draws you into a rather hypnotic vibe. There is this solid movement to the verse that drops just before the chorus hits. The build-up to the chorus is stunning and brings a truly fantastic orchestral feeling to the soundscape. The rise and fall between the verses and chorus are like the cresting of a wave of emotion. Through the music, the band have masterfully picked up the yearning to be true to yourself, only to be held back by something you can’t quite identify.
While the melody is stunning, Chris Boakes’ vocals take the emotive flows to a whole new level. His performance has a slightly retro new wave vibe that brings a slash of purples to the track. The performance curls around the lyrics that delve into thoughts and emotions that we can all relate to. The slightly paced flow of the chorus bursts into an explosion of coloured mist in the chorus. This lifts your spirits, letting you know that you can break the chains of society and embrace who you really are. Throughout the single, the band tempers the urge to be true with the anxiety and fears that come from not conforming. It is a really powerful single that captures something that so many people have fought through.
Powerful, moving and melodically stunning, ‘The Room Beneath My Skin’ by Young Astronaut is hypnotically beautiful as it works through relatable emotions. The music begins the hypnotic vibes of the track before the vocals slide in with a new wave edge. The emotive power of the single can’t be overstated as it shines beautifully from the sophisticated musical arrangement.
