Yodashe – FAM (2024)

With charm, sophistication and an elegant mastery of musical composition, singer-songwriter Yodashe weaves existential concepts with moving melodies. We were introduced to Yodashe last year with her well-received single ‘Visualization’, but she was already making waves on the pop scene for several years beforehand. From her 2020 debut ‘Take Time’ to the most recent release ‘FAM’, international audiences have described her as euphoric, chilling, delectably unsettling and dazzling. So, take a deep breath, cross your fingers and join us as we delve into her insatiable discography.

Following her critically acclaimed single ‘MRKTPLC’, ‘FAM’ is the second release from Yodashe in 2024, as well as the second single from her upcoming self-produced debut album. As with ‘MRKTPLC’ and ‘Visualization’, Yodashe’s haunting whispers slither through the melody; however, a stronger forcefulness exists in the new song with drums by Diego Torres-Cantu. An odd reminiscence to the iconic Prince inserts a tinge of RnB playfulness, yet this drop of old-school RnB/blues is a sliver of diversity in an avant-garde, boundary-breaking, almost impossible-to-define single.

A juxtaposition of elements, ‘FAM’ is simplistic in its stark disconnect but finds an overall kaleidoscopic unity. The ups and downs, back and forth, short sharp electronic with wistful haunting vocals ooze confidence, but there is a vulnerability hidden in the hushed soundscape. I find this intriguing as it not only excites my ears with an explosion of surprises, but it captures the contrary themes with melodic ease. When speaking about ‘FAM’, Yodashe explains:

“’FAM’ is an ode to spontaneity, playfulness, femininity and the beauty of living in the moment… the work contrasts a pensive, existential mood with an explosive, assertive provocation urging listeners to grasp the moment and explore life and love to their fullest potential.”

Written and produced by Yodashe at London’s Goldsmiths Music Studios, mixed by Mathew Keightley at Hackney Road Studios, and mastered by Cicely Balston at AIR Studios, ‘FAM’ is a single that oozes bold joy but with fragile innocence.
