Yodashe – EASTER (2024)
If you were to describe Yodashe in a single word, that would be exceptional. Exceptionally adventurous, exceptionally experimental and exceptionally inimitable. A pioneer in the avant-garde music scene, the UK-based singer-songwriter carves a niche and sets the trend for a new breed of artists. We were introduced to Yodashe last year with her electropop single ‘Visualization’, and this year she brought us ‘FAM’ – we are yet to find another artist to meet her intriguing musicality. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘EASTER’.
One aspect I find interesting about Yodashe is how each of her melodies has a connecting thread of electronic pop but offers complete distinction as a song. Following her well-received singles ‘FAM’ and ‘MRKTPLC’, she wades through a flash of beats and synths but each tune heading in a different direction. ‘EASTER’ veers toward a commercial electropop single following the traditional pop structure heard with Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande; however, then the penny drops and Yodashe uncovers a well of rough distortion.
Simplistic and soothing, ‘EASTER’ opens in the gentle lilt of a siren’s call drawing you through the mystical sonic forest. Sauntering about the trees, guided through the dells, skipping over the shining pebbles on the kaleidoscopic river – all is good. While continuous serenity shuffles through your soul, the siren’s call hits. Echoes of tenderness and tranquillity caress your skin but quickly the soothing turns to chaos. Distorted synths collide with swells of painful confusion as Yodashe turns about and drags you under the shimmering waters.
The melody is intoxicating but it is the concept that adds further profoundness to the sonic swirl. Yodashe explains:
“Written on Easter day during the first London lockdown, ‘EASTER’ is a haunting reflection on the early days of the pandemic, capturing the depression and disorientation that came with sudden isolation… It attempts to sonify the turbulence and haziness of the pandemic. It’s a deep dive into the abyss of insecurity, loss and fear of our collective warped, distorted reality.”
