Track of the Day: Yes Factory – Bad Luck Charm

Rockford, Illinois art-pop band, Yes Factory, bring forth their melodious new single ‘Bad Luck Charm’ awash with synth magic and new wave sentiment. Pulsed drums direct seamless blankets of sound with a myriad of musical elements blending and bouncing off of each other. The threads that hold the song together are harmonic piping motifs, murmuring bass riffs and beguiling vocals.

The indie band was formed in 2017 by original bandmates Brennan Reiter and Ian Zander. Since then it has attracted many more members drawn to a creative philosophy of saying “yes” to everything. The single released under Tambourine Machine Records follows the release of the band’s 2020 debut self-titled EP and ‘Bad Luck Charm’, as luck would have it, adds an indie-pop sensibility to the Yes Factory’s growing and diverse tracklist of released material. In the song, playful and visual lyrics poke fun at a past relationship which seemed good on the surface but ended badly. However, this love story hardly distinguishes between villains and victims.

Zander sings àla Kim Carnes in ‘Bette Davis Eyes’. His metaphors allude to Alice in Wonderland as the lyrics conjure up a three-legged rabbit chasing tail, wicked queens of hearts and a face full of mud. All the while, the song breaks into soothing refrains, oddly calming despite the chorus admitting to causing harm and misfortune. This latest offering by Yes Factory is pure, melodic, tragic fun and it’ll have you bopping to the beat while singing your heart out as you think about the one you’re glad got away.
