Xav Clarke – Good Enough (2021)

There are times when we all feel that we are not good enough at something. Xav Clarke understands this while offering an embracing of doubts and an infusion of positive vibes in ‘Good Enough’. Navigating positivity, self-deprecation, worry and feeling you are not good enough, the single has you moving to some thumping disco before ripping into you with a saxophone solo.

Continuing his unique brand of psychedelic pop, Clarke pulls on the experience he has gained playing in bands and writing music since his teenage years. While he has spent time touring Europe with his band, he spends just as much time making music in his bedroom. This has led to him composing scores for numerous animated series including Elliott From Earth.

The opening of ‘Good Enough’ is a blending of chilled tones and zipping pops. The gentle keys in the low levels are soothing as they ease the rough edges of self-doubt and draw you up into the rising of the music. The warbling electronic tones add a dreamy feeling to the music that is like a gossamer curtain drifting over the beats. Every element of the music brings a floating feeling like a warm day that fills your limbs with lethargy. While the melody has you floating, the saxophone bubbles from the depths in the latter part of the song. There is an irresistible nature to the saxophone that you just want to sink into and never leave.

The easiness of the melody is picked up by Clarke’s vocal performance. His voice is a hazy mist that wisps and settles on your skin. There is a questioning in his performance as he airs all the doubts we all have. The lyrics are wonderful because they are so relatable as they touch on Imposter Syndrome and the desire to shed the feeling of not being good enough. The tenor of his performance enhances the easy feeling of the melody which actually lifts the doubts from your chest and make you feel better about everything.

Xav Clarke tackles self-doubt, Imposter Syndrome, worry and burgeoning positivity in ‘Good Enough’. Through the soft and gentle soundscape, he airs all the worries that many people face while gently drawing you toward the light of positivity. While filled with relatable lyrics and a melody you want to sink into, the saxophone solo is definitely something to look out for.
