Wuzy Bambussy – Flux (2023)

Beginning as the alter ego of producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nikolai Jones, Wuzy Bambussy is a band that looks to transcend genres, make a stand and just have some fun with music. Joined by vocalist Kat Harrison who he met online, the collaborative project has been described as “inventive” (Up To Hear Music) and “a breath of fresh air…” (Pop Passion). Personally discovered by BBC Radio 6’s Tom Robinson, Wuzy Bambussy has not only received rave reviews but also airplay far beyond their UK borders including Brazil and the USA. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Flux’.

Following their well-received track ‘2 Miles High’, ‘Flux’ adopts a heavier, harder and more intense sound. Showcasing their innovativeness and versatility as artists, ‘Flux’ has a funk meets indie-rock with slivers of electropop as compared to previous material with strong electronic tones.

Described by Wuzy Bambussy as “a pulsating, haunting electro-rock anthem for the post-everything age…”, ‘Flux’ offers has a modern-day edginess to it but with a flair of old-school funk in the vocals. Toe-tapping and heart-pumping, the single tosses you into a whirlpool of sound twirling you about in the music. Intoxicating to say the least, but the melody seems to ensnare your senses to the point of suffocation – in a good, intriguing way. Introduce Kat Harrison’s vocals and you have a silvery thread sliding across your body within the melodic, well, melody.

While the pair consider there to be a “haunting” element in ‘Flux’, I find it not so much haunting but ethereal otherworldliness. With a combination of guitars, drumbeats and soaring strings there is an electric energy sparking throughout the single. As I mentioned, Harrison’s vocals seem to traverse the melody bringing a soothing ethereal element to ‘Flux’ but also enhancing the pulsating energy in an abrupt, symphonic way.
