Worldcub – Look Through The Keyhole (2022)

Originally performing under the name CaStLeS, Welsh brothers Cynyr (guitar and vocals) and Dion Hamer (guitar and vocals) began their musical journey several years ago. Fast-forward seven or so years and you have the insatiable Wales-based four-piece Worldcub. Known for their energetic performances, the Hamer brothers, Dion Jones (bass) and Osian Land (drums) are building a strong, loyal fanbase far beyond their UK borders. Along with shows in the UK (FOCUS Wales, Liverpool Sound City, Farmfest), Worldcub recently played at BreakOut West festival in Canada. On the blogosphere, Worldcub has been described as a unique discovery from Chicago’s UpToHear to France’s Info Music. The latest single to their well-received repertoire is ‘Look Through The Keyhole’.

Following their single ‘Torri’, Worldcub draws together elements of indie and surf-rock in ‘Look Through The Keyhole’. Soothing and smooth, the single has a hazy ambience as it sends you adrift on a kaleidoscopic sonic river. Groovy and laidback, there are chilled vibes to ‘Look Through The Keyhole’; however, a heavier, more hard-hitting rock tone is heard as the melody progresses. Tinges of power-pop flit through the tune and you become lost in the breath-taking swirl of genre-bending music.

As much fun as the song is for contemporary audiences, it has a nostalgic flair bringing a hint of the 80s to the track. I find this endearing as it so aptly expresses the theme behind ‘Look Through The Keyhole’ with its vintage vibe. Dion Hamer explains that ‘Look Through The Keyhole’ “is about a magic door to a time warp where you can step into a past life. It’s all about revisits, we do it all the time, we revisit our passions, memories, old haunts, old Elvis collection, last night’s pizza, it’s never the same experience…”

Sincere, sentimental and completely overwhelming, listening to Worldcub’s ‘Look Through The Keyhole’ is like going on an acid trip but without the acid. Now I know what Alice felt like after she fell through the rabbit hole into Wonderland.
