Worldcub – Exploding! (2025)

Beginning their musical journey as the duo CaStLeS, brothers Dion and Cynyr Hamer started splicing together various slicks of rock music – from kraut-rock to psych-rock and some surf-rock intonations – creating a unique sound from their home studio. Now operating as Worldcub, with the inclusion of Calvin Thomas (bass) and Jasmine Roberts (guitar), the Hamer brothers have earned international acclaim with various singles and albums. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Exploding!’

Following the well-received 2024 album, Back To The Beginning, ‘Exploding!’ is a kaleidoscopic swirl of indie-rock meets alternative rock music. Honestly, my first thought was a mesh of The White Stripes with Franz Ferdinand, but with a unique vintage flush of vintage rock ala Wings. Yet, as I continued to listen, I heard a more innovative sound proving Worldcub to be more eclectic, eccentric and obscure than originally thought.

Listening to Worldcub is not merely hearing a song but going on a sonic journey. Just as Alice jumped into the rabbit hole leading to her Wonderland, ‘Exploding!’ is our trip to our own Wonderland. Smooth, soft, plush cushions cover the shards of the hole’s walls making this a luxurious ride; however, the comfy cushions are overridden by a pulsating rush of kaleidoscopic sound.

In an intricate interplay of sound, crashing drums are heard behind that cushioning like a heartbeat. The psych-driven fuzziness of guitars whirls about you with frenzied confusion. A slip-slide of urgency almost crushes you, but all the while obliviousness reigns in its triumph and tragedy. For me, this is a particularly enthralling melody as it perfectly aligns with the paradoxical theme. Dion Hamer explains:

“The track was inspired by a rehearsal we had, Cynyr explored a few riffs with a more fuzzy sound. The lyrics flowed from what was on the news that night, on the TV and on social media especially. The relentless tension that comes from having all of that in your pocket all the time and how some people can eventually become desensitised to it, which inspired the paradoxical nature of the track.”
