Wish Queen – Sub Rosa (2022)

The brainchild of singer-songwriter Grace Sullivan, Wish Queen is a poetic, elegant and engaging musical project that defies genres. Adding a synthetic tinge to nostalgic ballads, her music has a sense of familiarity and freshness. A brand-new find for me, this is my introduction to Wish Queen; however, she is already turning heads here, there and everywhere. Featured on Roadie Music, Sinusoidal Music and Find No Enemy, US-based Wish Queen is quickly building an international following. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Sub Rosa’.

The first release in 2022, ‘Sub Rosa’ has been described as a “hypnotic” and a “poetic masterpiece” by the notable blog Sinusoidal Music. In our mind, Sinusoidal Music is absolutely correct about the intoxicating ‘Sub Rosa’. A collaborative project with Nathaniel Hunt of Muzzy Fossa, the new single is an exciting slice of music.

Similar to her debut single ‘Coast To Coast’ (released in 2021), ‘Sub Rosa’ immediately tips you into a sonic swirl of music. Flooded with a hazy ambience within a kaleidoscopic bubble of sound, the instrumental arrangement is a hypnotic slip of musical magic to our ears. Interestingly enough, while the synth-laden track has a hint of 80s synth-pop to it, Wish Queen and Muzzy Fossa bring a contemporary pop edginess to the soundscape.

As I said, Wish Queen is a new find for me, so I was unsure what to expect. What I found is a poetic, sophisticated and inspired synth-driven melody slathered with bold, rich vocals. While Wish Queen’s vocals have been compared to Adele and Fiona Apple, I find her dulcet tones far more distinctive. It appears to have an obscurity to the tones while retaining a mellowness that merges flawlessly with the flowing tune. Unique to say the least!

So, my overall opinion of Wish Queen and ‘Sub Rosa’? Personally, I love the music – it’s calming, chilled and laidback but with mild obscurity to keep you on your toes. I can’t wait for more from this talented artist.

In addition to the single, Wish Queen released an official music video for ‘Sub Rosa’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube Channel:
