William John Titus Bishop – Second Time Around (2024)
Tackling existential issues with a minimalistic approach, singer-songwriter William John Titus Bishop demonstrates how the simplest form of sound or expression can be more impactful than the loudest noise. This is my introduction to Bishop, and I’m sad to say I’m rather late to the party; but better late than never. Along with various publications, radio stations, festival performances, collaborations and more, Bishop earns a loyal following onstage and off. Confidence oozes in his live shows – as it does through his musical masterpieces. Come with us as we delve into his song ‘Second Time Around’.
As with his well-received singles ‘The Palmist’ and ‘Hesperus and Phosphorus’, ‘Second Time Around’ showcases an obscure eclecticism signature to Bishop. Distinctive in the power of spoken word in songs, ‘Second Time Around’ is a prominent narrative with Bishop’s rich vocals taking centre stage; however, the guitar in the background enhances the sentimentality of the track. Moreover, the myriad of styles from pop to folk – vintage folk strongly evident – highlights the innovation and experimentalism of Bishop.
One aspect I find intriguing about this artist is not the off-kilter barebones sound, but rather the impact of his poetic lyrics. Listening to ‘Second Time Around’ is like sitting down while Bishop stands to make his sincere speech. Penned as a song “protest song and an exploration of interpersonal relationships in their rawest form”, ‘Second Time Around’ has a profound message delicately observed with simultaneously brooding and wistfulness.
So, what do I say about Bishop and his latest single? For me, this is one of the most powerful songs I have heard for a time, and I cannot wait for his upcoming album.
In addition to the single, William John Titus Bishop released an official music video for ‘Second Time Around’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
