William Hut – Don’t Give Up (2023)

Featured in notable international publications, such as Send Me Your Ears, Roadie Music, Sinusoidal Music, and Less Than 1000 Followers, Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter William Hut is reaching audiences on a global scale. Known for his work with the Norwegian group Poor Rich Ones, Hut is a veteran in the music industry, but it is his solo work that we are looking at today. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Don’t Give Up’.

The first release in three years (give or take), ‘Don’t Give Up’ follows Hut’s 2019 release ‘Snowfall’. A far more sophisticated arrangement, Hut shows an evolution in his tone, style and musicality – perhaps a honing of his style over the pandemic years? Either way, this sophistication and elegance flow effortlessly from a smooth guitar-driven track. While Hut falls into the indie-pop genre, there are tinges of old-school indie-rock driven through the track. In this song, I find Hut’s artistic ability to contrast vintage sounds with modern-day tones creating something that is both familiar and fresh.

Writing music with personal messages shared in an intimate vocal execution, William Hut explains that ‘Don’t Give Up’ “is a song about living with mediocre self-esteem and everyday anxiety.” The frustration, desperation and angst are evident in the dulcet tones; however, a rush of vulnerability and distress come through as the melody wraps itself around the intimate lyricism. We all have to deal with the understanding and acceptance of being just an average human, and this is captured perfectly in Hut’s new song.

Sincere, sentimental, honest and genuine, William Hut cuts to the core with his delicate exposition of human fragility in ‘Don’t Give Up’.
