Will Soma – Summer Afternoons (2024)
While his earlier material is darker, heavier and more rock-driven, singer-songwriter Will Soma breathes a folk-inspired refreshment into an already genre-diverse discography. Hailing from Australia, Soma has been entertaining audiences with his confident performances across Sydney; however, while he was building a following down under, his music turned heads across the globe. Only recently putting pen to paper with his poetic words and natural storytelling skills, Soma is an exciting up-and-comer in the music industry. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Summer Afternoons’.
As I mentioned, Will Soma subdues the hard-hitting rock with lilts of folk in his more recent work. His 2023 single ‘CHANGE THE PAST’ sliced the alternative rock tone with a smoother folk sound, and ‘Summer Afternoons’ embraces the subdued sound even more. Soma’s first release in 2024, ‘Summer Afternoons’ highlights the evolution in his style – the light-hearted folk is tinged with hints of pop and a hidden drip of indie-rock shining bright in the background.
Recorded in Australia in Rose Bay, ‘Summer Afternoons’ has a strong simplicity to the melody with stark bare-bones appeal; however, it simultaneously shimmers with kaleidoscopic sonic threads littered across the soundscape. Joyful and charming but with a hint of vulnerability belying the hopeful lyricism, Soma’s warm vocals capture the essence of love without too many bells and whistles. Soma explains:
“This song was written for my wife. No particular reason, just wanted to express on a particular day how I felt. The song is about wanting to get back to the first feeling of love with someone and simply being happy. The main message of the story is that things are better with you and everything positive lasts that little bit longer when you are around.”
One aspect I enjoy about Will Soma’s music, particularly ‘Summer Afternoons’ is how a live performance feeling emanates from the studio-recorded melody. Collaborating with session musicians on the piano and interspersed strings, the guitar-driven track incorporates sophisticated elegance and raw innocence blurring the lines between mature and naïve. All in all, ‘Summer Afternoons’ is the perfect theme song for those drowsy Sunday afternoons when you are happily curled up with your loved one in blissful joy.
