Will Harrison & Hannah Koski – Send in the Fireflies (2020)

The last year has seen the world as we know it drastically change. These changes have brought their own struggles and melancholy with them. It is this that has been picked up by Will Harrison and Hannah Koski for their single ‘Send in the Fireflies’. Using themes of relationships and love, the single offers a light against the darkness these changes have brought.

After meeting by chance in a coffee shop while at university, the pair have been working to combine Koski’s serene vocals with Harrison’s more classically inspired style. This is the first single they have released together and achieves an artful merger of tones. With a melancholic joy, the song captures what many of us have felt over the last year and turned it into something hopeful.

Koski’s vocals open ‘Send in the Fireflies’ with a tender piano line. The dancing of the piano makes you think of fireflies flitting through the night lightly twinkling in and out of sight. From the depths of the soundscape, a more classically inspired wave of strings breathes through. The different elements of the melody come together for a touching soundscape that settles on your shoulders like a sheer shawl.

The delicacy of the melody dances around Koski’s vocals. Her smooth and serene vocals add to the warmth of the melody and enhance the vibe of the song. Through her performance, you can feel the warmth of a clear summer night. As you are covered in the gentle touches of her voice, you are pulled into the story of the lyrics. Using a relationship as the central story, the duo work through much more than the emotions of a couple. As the song progresses, you are filled with a tentative hope for the future even as you are confronted with uncontrollable changes.
