Wild Horse – Do You Wanna Talk (2023)

Only just into their 20s, UK-based trio Wild Horse has already enchanted audiences across the globe with praising reviews, lots of airplay (including being BBC ‘Track of the Day’ more than once), and in June 2023 they were mentioned in Parliament. Awesome, isn’t it? Not only are they winning hearts via the airwaves and online, Wild Horse have a reputation for energetic, enthusiastic and intoxicating live shows. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Do You Wanna Talk’.

On the heels of the well-received single ‘Tangled’, ‘Do You Wanna Talk’ continues to explore the complexities of human emotions and relationships in jovial indie-pop meets indie-rock melody. Penned by Wild Horse’s frontman and primary songwriter, Jack Baldwin, ‘Do You Wanna Talk’ is “an anthem for those on-off relationships”. Using a personal narrative, or rather singing the song from his perspective as if in a conversation, ‘Do You Wanna Talk’ begs the question of what they want, what they need, and whether it is worth his time. The final line: “I don’t wanna talk” seems to answer this.

Reminiscent of The Byrds and the Beatles, the jangle-pop tone offers a bouncy cheerfulness to ‘Do You Wanna Talk’, despite the darker thought-provoking theme. Tossing you into a swirl of kaleidoscopic sound, bold guitars meld with pounding drums in an intoxicating whirlwind. The one element that seems to keep you anchored in the sonic whirlwind is Jack Baldwin’s vocals.

Rich and warm, you feel comforted by his voice. Interestingly enough, the comfort overlies a discomfort as he sings about the “on-off relationship”. A bit of a sucker for accents, the slight English inflexion of Baldwin’s voice adds a tinge of Britpop to the funky rock vibe taking us back to the days of Paul McCartney.
