Who Parked The Car – Can’t Get Over You (2022)
With the aim of creating foot-stomping music with sonic swirls and groovy vibes, Who Parked The Car is an eight-piece jazz-funk meets soul meets electropop group. Hailing from France, although not all of the band members are French, this unique troupe has an insatiable sound leaving you breathless from the first chord of any of their songs. Inspired by the jazz of Snarky Puppy, Louis Cole and Julian Lage, the pop melodies of Bruno Mars and the old-school sounds of Stevie Wonder and Supertramp, Who Parked The Car is laidback but also profound in their tunes. The latest addition to their critically acclaimed discography is the single ‘Can’t Get Over You’.
One of the final songs to be released in 2022, ‘Can’t Get Over You’ is a fan favourite at their live performances “rigorously tested before being distilled in the studio, this song existed on stage long before reaching a pair of headphones” – and you can certainly feel the live band boldness in the melody. One can hear that the song has been toned down slightly to build a harmonic tune for headphones; however, the clear prominence of each element is so that it offers attention to all instrumentation giving every member a moment to shine.
I always say there are songs you need to listen to for the “full experience” and ‘Can’t Get Over You’ is one of these singles. I can describe everything from the perfect vocals to sexy saxophone and dynamic drums, but it is the way the music slithers into your ears and rattles about your cranium that leaves you with a slightly heady and soul-stirring sensation. The thing is, while the melody intoxicates a listener, it is the juxtaposition of sweet tones and a “not-so-sweet theme of one-way love” that highlights their depth as artists.
A massive fan of Chicago, I love Who Parked The Car with the sultry vocals, charming harmonies and enchanting horns all shared with nostalgic flair. No one has ever outdone Chicago for me, but Who Parked The Care is certainly nipping at the iconic band’s toes – at least in my opinion.
