What Strange Beasts – Cat’s Paws (2022)

Described as “…elegant and fresh…” (Science of Noise), “whether sharing lead vocals or building harmonies, there’s something special about…new US act What Strange Beasts” (Prog Magazine) and a “…range of music like a trip back through time covering many aspects of pop, rock, psyche….and so much more.” (Prog Planet Reviews), US-based group What Strange Beasts are an eclectic foursome set to take over the world. Dazzling curators across the globe, they have also received coverage from notable radio stations, including Radio Rock FM and The Nine Eight Podcast, reaching an international audience. Come with us as we delve into their intriguing new music.

Following the well-received album The Maestro’s Tale, What Strange Beasts end 2022 with the track ‘Cat’s Paws’. The lead single from their upcoming album Starlight’s Castaways, ‘Cat’s Paws’ leans toward the grunge and pop-rock sounds of the 1990s. Interestingly enough, while a strong rock flavour is heard in the tune, ‘Cat’s Paws’ is interwoven with a psychedelic tone making it both heavy and hazy. Light-hearted in a way, it is easy to tap your toe and jump about to the single. Yet, it simultaneously has a profoundness oozing in the passionate instrumentation capturing both boldness and vulnerability in the arrangement.

The band explain that “when we write a song, it’s personal; it’s always personal. The characters and concepts in the music are metaphors for emotions we are all experiencing to varying degrees and the stories give us a way forward with those feelings.” When it comes to ‘Cat’s Paws’, the band further shared that it was a song that “…we really workshopped quite a bit to get the right feeling to the lyrical flow and really capture the offsets of chaos and excitement that the sound brought…”

So, what do I think of What Strange Beasts? This being my introduction to the band, I was unsure what to expect. Now I have listened to their music, I would classify them as pure class. Sophisticated, sentimental and otherworldly, What Strange Beasts are a band to keep an eye on.
