Wesley Harper – Love Is Going (2024)

One day at a bowling alley in New York, producer Jon Notar met musician Wesley Harper and Notar said “Hey we should make music”; the rest is, as they say, a serendipitous history. Performing in the band Camp Saint Helene, the pair embrace that awesome collaboration. It is, however, Harper’s solo project that catches our eyes and ears today.

Alright, great, wonderful, but who the hell is Wesley Harper? Hailing from Catskill, New York (that’s in the USA), Harper is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter delving into the core of humanity. With influences from Paul Simon and Jaco Pastorius to Bon Iver and the Beatles, one can imagine a nostalgic whisper of folk flooding through his music – and that’s kind of right. Yet, Harper is no one-trick pony dipping into various pots of folk, pop and rock. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Love Is Going’.

Following his critically acclaimed track ‘Suspicion’, ‘Love Is Going’ is a kaleidoscopic blend of indie-pop and synth-pop bound in a folk-rock wrapper. Interestingly, while you find yourself drifting along a smooth sonic river, the interspersed drums, keyboard and piano clip the tune with avant-garde sentimentality. Playing all the instruments, with the exception of drums added by Notar and Dylan Nowik, ‘Love Is Going’ is an elegant expression of Harper’s soul in a barebones song.

Take from the upcoming album Fun Pain, ‘Love Is Going’ celebrates Harper’s respect for human intuition and change. He explains:

“There’s a feeling you get when you know something is changing – because you look and, actually, it has already changed. You have already changed too. This song lives inside that moment: premonition, realisation, and reflection, and it’s all happening at the same time. It’s beautiful too because change is the essential nutrient in the soil that feeds growth. That’s the only way you will get a flower and then the fruit…”

In addition to the single, Wesley Harper released an official music video for ‘Love Is Going’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
