Wendy Wang – Secrets (2024)

Known for profound storytelling, tender melodies and poetic lyricism, singer-songwriter Wendy Wang merges a distinctive electropop haunting with the mystical allure of alternative pop. Raised in a culturally diverse family, and unafraid to explore provocative issues, Chinese-American Wang brings a new perspective to themes like mental health, love and social uncertainty. This is my introduction to Wang but from the moment I pressed “play” I felt as if I had known her for years; a deep sense of familiarity and warmth at first impression. Come with me as I dive into her discography with the new single ‘Secrets’.

Following her well-received single ‘letters from my ex’, ‘Secrets’ is a new step in Wang’s musical journey diverging from the signature pop tone to a heavier rock-influenced sound. Produced by Cameron Hornbeck, the melody combines crashing drums, scorching guitars, and a bold bass in a kaleidoscopic swoosh of sound. Yet, while the song is sophisticated and mature in its composition and production, raw naivety and innocence linger throughout the track. It is not the forceful instrumentation capturing this interplay of bold and subdued but rather Wang’s vocals. Interestingly, the delicate hushed voice also contains a combination of intricate fragility and bold confidence.

The melody itself is intriguing and can be appreciated by any pop-rock fan; however, it is the lyricism that adds poignant depth and profoundness to ‘Secrets’. Penned by Wang, ‘Secrets’ is a deep insight into personal experiences of love, betrayal, despair and angst. Wendy Wang explains:

“I wrote ‘Secrets’ about the complex feelings from finding out the things your ex had hidden from you after the relationship has ended. I think this song is for anyone who has felt betrayed in any way in their life – whether it’s by a friend, a significant other, or even just an acquaintance. I want people to feel a cathartic release when they listen to it, it’s really a song you can just scream to.”

Sincere, sentimental and brutally honest, ‘Secrets’ crawls into your heart and evokes pure emotions of inner turmoil. The thing is, as dark and tumultuous as the song may be, it also offers glimmers of hope and solace as Wang holds your hand in warm understanding.
