Webmoms – Slow Burn (2024)

Beginning his musical journey as part of the alternative rock group Hypophora, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Webmoms steps to the left (or right if you want) bringing us an eclectic fusion of RnB, hip hop and soul in his solo project. In this kaleidoscopic pool of sound, Webmoms proves two things: an off-kilter approach and not to be pigeonholed. From his 2020 debut single ‘Summer Salad’ to 2021’s ‘Starsigns’ and 2024’s ‘Hands’, the UK-based artist has intoxicated audiences with confident and infectious melodies. Come with us as we delve into one of his more recent singles, ‘Slow Burn’.

Taken from his four-track EP For Us By Us, ‘Slow Burn’ is a RnB-filled melody with interspersed hip hop vocals, but strongly wrapped in vintage soul. I find this interesting as there is a retro vibe flushed with modern-day edges, so it’s like being hugged by an old friend instead of shaking hands with a new acquaintance. The bold beats, rich guitar and pulsating bass join in a soothing tune BUT there is a separate layering of each instrument offering some individuality in the harmonic symphony.

For me, ‘Slow Burn’ is a shove back to the 1970s soul scene with its nostalgic rhythms and vintage ambience. Its gentle smoothness is like setting off on a glistening sonic river; however, as marvellous as the gentle ride is, there is profoundness in the waves. An emotionally driven piece of poignant music, the track “explores the melancholy of a young person navigating the 21st century…” As much as it is filled with vulnerability, the juxtaposition between chilled-out grooves and serious themes makes you smile while Webmoms exposes human fragility.

One of the more unique aspects of ‘Slow Burn’ is it being the first track in Webmoms recording history to feature Webmoms exclusively. Tending to collaborate with musicians, ‘Slow Burn’ may unconsciously be one of his more intimate pieces. With barebones starkness, there is no one else to hide behind or share the light with; instead, it is Webmoms in all his grit and glory. Sincere, sentimental and vibrant, ‘Slow Burn’ is a song that will stick in your head for hours or even days to come.
