Weak Tyrant – Slide (2021)
Brand new and sparkling bright, Switzerland-based group Weak Tyrant is blasting through your speakers with their unique sound. All former members of hard rock/post-metal groups, the lads are taking to a new genre to connect with listeners and share their melodic, well, melodies. Despite being a newbie in the alternative rock music scene, Weak Tyrant has received positive feedback for their debut single ‘Slide’. Featured on Fruit Sonic, Less Than 1000 Followers, Sinusoidal Music, Our Sound Music, Edgar Allan Poets and Rising Artists Blog, the fivesome are reaching audiences on an international level. Now, let’s take a look at this new single.
Combining elements of indie-rock, alternative rock and pop-punk, ‘Slide’ is a hard-hitting track with a reminiscence to early 2000s bands We The Kings, All Time Low and Mayday Parade. Yet, while there is a likeness to these artists, Weak Tyrant retains a contemporary distinction in their innovative sound. A melodic metal meets pop-punk if you will. Combining pounding drums, powerful guitars and rough vocals, it is easy to become lost in the headbanging soundscape.
While the band members do have heavier music experiences behind them, they take to a lighter option like a fish to water. Weak Tyrant shares that “…emotions break through and intensity comes first – it’s simply in a different musical language”, and we have to agree entirely. With well-placed crescendos leading guitar riffs into catchy choruses, ‘Slide’ has an upbeat, heart-racing quality that you can’t help but love. The thing is, the song is not only attractive because of the bold melody but also the inspired lyricism.
A conceptual piece, ‘Slide’ touches on the issue of destiny, origins and ultimate existential meaning. It makes you really think about the message but takes it a step further in a melancholic way. The group share that ‘Slide’ “…describes the feeling of losing sight of the essential in this process. Suddenly thoughts become a load and you carry a burden with you”. Reflective and poignant, the lads show real insight in this delicately complex blast of music.
