We Are All Fossils – Rapture (2025)

Being South African, I tend to find South African artists most exciting and appealing – South African pride, I suppose. Yet, as much as I love discovering fellow homeland musicians, they’re not all great; today, I introduce you to an artist who exceeds positive expectations in the best way. The brainchild of Durban-born singer-songwriter Deist Oelofse, We Are All Fossils makes his mark with an eclectic blend of traditional and modern-day folk. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Rapture’.

Following his well-received 2024 single ‘Hollow’, We Are All Fossils saunters into 2025 with several flavours of folk music bound in a single song. A song to be experienced and not merely heard, ‘Rapture’ is a wistful journey through a sonic forest. Holding Oelofse’s hand, you travel along the charming road as fairies peek from behind the tall trees. A wash of cool, wistful air caresses your check with each ambient sound; however, as calming as the track may be, there is a sense of fragility to the song tilting toward heart-breaking vulnerability in heart-warming joviality.

One aspect I find intriguing about ‘Rapture’ is its duality. The oscillation between full-bodied joy and intricate vulnerability; the bare-bones starkness wandering along a kaleidoscopic soundscape; the individuality of each instrument coming together as a harmonic veil of sound – it’s a push-and-pull of happy, sad, empowering, gut-wrenching resilience and tragedy. Oelofse explains:

“’Rapture’ captures the journey of breaking free from numbness and embracing change. Inspired by mornings in the Lake District, the song reflects on nature’s resilience – how it adapts to shifting conditions, no matter how harsh. This sparked a personal reckoning with my own resistance to change and the impact it’s had over time.”

In addition to the single, We Are All Fossils released an official music video for ‘Rapture’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
