VosFM – Weight (2022)

15 years after meeting at Oberlin College, Bill McElnea (vocals and guitar) and Tom Francavilla (bass and production) reunited to form the enigmatic VosFM. Described as an “emotive electro-rock” pairing, the lads have an edgy rock flair to their synth-driven music. This is my introduction to VosFM but they have already turned heads across the globe with coverage on various playlists. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the single ‘Weight’.

Following their track ‘Pink Horizon’, ‘Weight’ adopts a somewhat softer but also quite hard-hitting sound. The influence of Depeche Mode is evident in ‘Weight’ as VosFM bring old-school synth-pop to modern-day audiences. As with Depeche Mode, there is a haziness to the track leading listeners through a foggy sonic forest. The thing is, while you could become easily lost in the hazy ambience, the lads hold out a hand to navigate you through the mist.

I mentioned that ‘Weight’ was softer and gentler than previous releases; however, the song has a heavier quality in the minimalistic soundscape. Bill McElnea lays his rather haunting voice atop a synth-laden melody which, and I’m not ashamed to say this, gave me the creeps. No seriously, I experienced a spine-chilling, goosebump-inducing feeling throughout the single. Interestingly enough, the darkness is quite apt when it comes to the theme of ‘Weight’ – the difficulty of maintaining trust in close relationships.

Sincere, sentimental, obscure and insightful, VosFM intoxicates listeners with their intimate new single ‘Weight’.
