Vincent J. Rigney – Squeezed To The Bone (2023)

An established singer-songwriter with a reputation for enthusiastic performances, Vincent J. Rigney entered our lives earlier this year with his debut single ‘Beautiful Human’. His dulcet tones wove elegantly through a toe-tapping folk melody. With rave reviews from various blogs, playlists and regular airplay on BBC Radio, Rigney turned heads far beyond his UK borders. He returns to our eyes and ears with the sophomore single ‘Squeezed To The Bone’.

The second track from his upcoming EP Songs From The Water Tower, ‘Squeezed To The Bones’ is harder, heavier and grungier than ‘Beautiful Human’. Recorded and produced with Edd Hartwell at Lime Monkeys in Essex, ‘Squeezed To The Bone’ blends elements of blues-rock with rock and roll in a gritty sonic wrapper. As with his debut single, Rigney has a way of taking Hartwell’s sophisticated production and inserting the rawness of a live session into the melody. Then again, it’s Hartwell’s superb skills that weave the ruggedness into a toe-tapping, heart-pumping melody.

Bold guitars match blasting drums tossing you into a kaleidoscopic sonic pool, but the intricacy of the melody is not the only complex element in ‘Squeezed To The Bone’. Using human experience as inspiration, Rigney lured us into a world of self-discovery in ‘Beautiful Human’ – ‘Squeezed To The Bone’ elaborates slightly.

Living in a world of constant challenges and uncertainty, stepping away from the norm can be overwhelming. Rigney speaks about his “stepping away from the norm” and delves into that unstable realm of self-employment. He explains:

“My song ‘Squeezed To The Bone’ was written about a time when I decided to go from being employed to self-employed running a painting and decorating business that in the beginning didn’t quite go as planned and I struggled financially. Singing and songwriting for me is healing in many ways as I like to get things off my chest.”

Dark and grungy with a moving melody, listening to ‘Squeezed To The Bone’ is a brash reminder of the troubles people face in reality. Interestingly, just as dark and depressing as it may be, there is a shimmer of optimism glowing beneath.
