A multi-instrumentalist, she does everything on the tracks herself, from writing to recording. Having always known she wanted to be involved in music, Dodson has gone through many phases, from wanting to be in musicals, to orchestras. Now, she is certain in her knowledge that recording her own music is what she wants and these two songs are a wonderful step in this direction.
‘Homesick’ gentle washes through you like a brook of easy feelings. Dodson’s vocals are like a light breeze ruffling your hair with their tenderness. While the single has a touchingly beautiful sound, the vocals bring a touch of sepia to the emotions. It is like looking at an old photograph and remembering the person you fell in love with, only to be confronted by the tugging knowledge that they are not who you think they are. The movement of the melody is reminiscent of small waves lapping on the beach, while the vocals pull your senses out into the clouds that hang over the water. The melody does pick up tempo later in the track, changing the feeling slightly as you feel yourself moving on from the bittersweet emotions.
‘Opaline’ offers a more kaleidoscopic feeling as Dodson’s vocals continue their light touch. Beneath her performance, the drums roll forward, while the instrumentation creates a haze of sound that slides against it. The twinkle of multiple colours through the soundscape glitter like the sparks of affection and appreciation we feel for those who help us in our darkest times. The lyrics move between the dark feelings that can overwhelm you and the shining light someone can bring to your life as they help you. Through all of this, you feel that you are not alone in what you are feeling and that there is hope for a brighter future.
