VAN ELST – Forevermore (2022)

Dreamy ethereal tones atop an electronic bass with darker passion, VAN ELST is a unique electropop meets psychedelic rock artist. Compared to the likes of Joy Division, there is a moodiness that slicks through his profound work tossing you from pillar to post in its evocative way. This is not our first time listening to VAN ELST, but it is proof that we cannot forget his sound. The thing is, we are not the only ones singing his praises with coverage from Rising Artists Blog, The Punk Head and various playlists. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Forevermore’.

Following his well-received single ‘Où es tu’, VAN ELST continues his provocative sonic journey with ‘Forevermore’. As with ‘Où es tu’, there is a focus on a person’s mind and human experiences. In ‘Forevermore’, he takes a step further capturing you in an ethereal look at infinity – how to hold onto a precious moment and hope for this emotion to last forever. With a combination of steady drumbeats and synths, the Dutch producer creates a dreamy soundscape in which you can easily lose yourself. Interestingly enough, while the sonic landscape is minimalistic in its instrumentation, it is kaleidoscopic as you whirl about this ethereal haze. VAN ELST describes the track as “…a pool of blue and purple matter…”, and honestly, I can see the blue-purple pool when listening to ‘Forevermore’.

While the melody can hold you in its infectious, mystical spiral, ‘Forevermore’ is much more than a swirl of music. VAN ELST explains that when creating the song he “…envisioned myself submerged into the pool of blue and purple entangled with someone I love until the end of time, holding onto the romantic and perhaps naïve idea that as long as we hold onto each other nothing could ever change or break us apart…I found that this moment in which I felt this feeling of eternal happiness was difficult to retain after it left my present mind…”

Yes, the track could be considered soothing with a sense of melancholy in the bold lyrics; however, it is more empowering and optimistic than originally imagined. It carries sparks of hope in the decadent melody and asks us to “…find a calling in life rather than focussing on being completely lost…”
