V/Terpan – Sun (2022)
Inspired by the likes of The Doors, Muse, Queens of the Stone Age, Billie Eilish and even Lady Gaga, UK-based V/Terpan has a melting pot of influences from which to create a sound. It was in 2019 that the Greek musician began releasing music and all to critical acclaim with coverage from Less Than 1000 Followers and Edgar Allan Poets (to name a couple). The latest addition to his discography is his sophomore EP Sun.
The first release in two years, at least according to Spotify, Sun is a musical evolution for V/Terpan moving from the darker pop sound of When The Poems Gave Us Life to a rock amalgam. Just as there is a change from more melancholic tones, Sun takes the listener on a transcendental journey from “the hot sunny deserts of suburban USA to the cold northern European plains”. The thing is, while there is a journey through the five-track EP, there is a similar theme in the conceptual release – the theme of love.
“Lyrically, these songs are a tribute to the highest forms of love expression, for example, the dreamy affirmations in ‘Sun’ and the parental protective kind of love in ‘Until The End’. These five songs describe love as I have experienced it and as simply as possible. Love for a person, love for ourselves, love for art, love for life.” – V/Terpan on Sun
Opening with the track ‘Sun’, we are introduced to a grunge-inspired sound that carries throughout the majority of the EP. Dreamy soundscapes, distorted guitars and pounding drums play out in ‘Sun’, ‘Let The Music’ and ‘My Sorrow’. V/Terpan’s hushed vocals take us through a mystic sonic forest where you can become easily lost. Yet, while the hushed soundscape does persist, a boldness can be heard in ‘The Path’ as the instrumentation soars in fiery, almost flamenco-tinged style.
While each of the tracks has a uniqueness about them, I have to admit ‘Until The End’ is my favourite melodically and lyrically. Perhaps it is the acoustic-inspired tone and slower tempo that makes it preferable. Perhaps it is the inclusion of a piano wrapped around V/Terpan’s soulful vocals that turns my head. Regardless of what the reason is, this charming ballad ends Sun off with beautiful artistry.
