Urban Heat – You’ve Got That Edge (2024)

Austin natives Urban Heat have all the gravitas of a band who have held court at the city’s world-renowned SXSW. With a sound which I can only liken to the post-punk ferocity of Joy Division with the synth-laden sound of a phoenix which rose from the ashes following the sad passing of Ian Curtis, New Order.

With the new track ‘You’ve Got That Edge’, we’re treated to synth punk at its finest. The pumping baritone vocals delivered by frontman Jonathon Horstmann, burrow their way straight into your mind and you’ll be singing along after the first listen. This coupled with a backing track that had me hooked instantly, I found myself lost in the single loving the clear 80s vibes they were giving out.

The more I explored the track, the more poignant it became. I found the exploration of self-assessment and the self-deprecating internal dialogue we all experience, a beautifully honest look at the human condition. As the song progressed, I loved the focus on how powerful isolation can be when making changes and how liberating it can be to realise your life is all on you. I totally agree with this message, because it’s an important lesson that when it boils down to it we’re all isolated in our decisions, good and bad.

I’ll be honest I’m completely new to Urban Heat and like so many bands I’ve been blessed to discover this year, I am an instant fan. I loved getting into their debut album Wellness, it’s more of the same great sound and if you enjoyed ‘You’ve Got That Edge’ – I recommend you check it out. It will definitely keep you entertained until the release of their new album The Tower, due out on August 16th, and if ‘You’ve Got That Edge’ is anything to go by I have high hopes.
