Under Delusion – Runaway (2022)
Under Delusion has taken us from provocative ‘Shame’ to melancholic ‘Follow Me’, to the enchanting rock of ‘Awaken’. Across these singles, they have shown their versatility and musical prowess which really shines in ‘Runaway’. This single is packed with everything that we have come to love about the band, from guitar riffs to strong drums, groovy synths and charming vocals.
Putting you into a hypnotic trance, the single pushes dark wave into post-punk, with a sprinkling of synth-rock over everything. There are also a number of questions that the band asks that really get you thinking long after the single has ended. After putting you into a trance, the single will linger pleasantly in the recesses of your mind.
‘Runaway’ draws you into the dark wave vibes from the first note. There is a slightly sinister vibe to the opening line that only becomes darker as the beats enter. It is an infectious melodic movement that you can’t help but get caught in. The guitar riffs fly through your senses while the strong drums have you bopping to their sounds, before everything rises on the chorus. Woven into this are some groovy synths that hold all the melodic elements together. The sweeping grandeur of the chorus drops for the dark pulses of the verses, keeping you tumbling through the hypnotic flows of the track. It is really impossible for you to avoid falling into the band’s trap as the music swirls and sinks its hooks into your muscles. The darkness is addictive as it touches every note of the track, before a lighter touch comes later in the single, only to rise back into the pulses of the chorus.
While the melody is packed with hypnotic movements, the vocals bring their own dark charm to the track. There is a smoothness to the performance on the verses that works with the dark melodics to grab your attention and plant the first seeds of hypnosis. When the chorus hits, there is a serious rock and post-punk flow to the vocals as they soar to new heights. Through all of this, their charm never ends and only invites you to fall further under their spell. As the melody drops, the vocals move, match slipping into the shadows of the world. The darkness of the single adds an edge to the questions and need to escape that is laced into the lyrics.
