Under Delusion – Over the Rainbow (2022)

Under Delusion is a band that we can’t get enough of as they throw us from melancholy to enchanting rock tales with their outstanding musical versatility. They continue to showcase their musical prowess with their sadder single ‘Over the Rainbow’. Written in loving memory of their friend Maxx Verkhovski, the single blends emo rock with melodic metal, while tugging at your heartstrings.

Balancing their familiar sound with the depths of emotion in the track, they let us know that their fresh approach to alternative rock really knows no bounds. Reflecting a sadness that anyone who has lost someone close to them can connect with, the single offers a fullness of emotion that is truly touching. If you loved their last releases, this new one is sure to hit all the right notes.

‘Over the Rainbow’ hits the ground running with a crash of synth tones with an underlayer of darkness. The melody is a wonderful blend of synth rock and emo rock sensibilities. The higher layer is packed with a colourful wash of synths that bring a kaleidoscope to the melody. Resting beneath is an undulating darkness that brings the first hints of sadness and pain. It is a stunning mixture that brings the emotions of losing someone close to you to life. There is a feeling of pain that hits deep in your chest, only to be lightly soothed by a touch of lighter emotion that is the joy of having known the person. It is a rather powerful mixture that captures an emotional experience that is often quite hard to quantify.

The emo touches of the low levels of the melody are picked up by the vocals as they bring a further sadness to the soundscape. Through the verses, the band works through their grief with a poetic lyrical touch. Everything rises on the chorus for a lighter touch that lifts you off the ground and has you reaching for something in the sky that is always just out of reach. The poignant emotions that swirled in the melody are taken to new levels with the vocals. There is a touch of the experiences they had with their friend that turns into sadness and the understanding that he remains with them even now, through the music they have created together.

Under Delusion fill you with the sadness of grief and the joy of having known someone who is now gone in the emotive ‘Over the Rainbow’. Through the melody, the band combines synths and emo rock to bring the dual emotions to life. The vocals work through the despair of loss and the knowledge that someone stays with you even once they are gone.
