Ultrasonic Zebras – Some Kind of Sympathy (2023)

From prog-rock to pop, glam-rock to reggae, Canadian duo Ultrasonic Zebras have a sound that is diverse, adventurous, and a complete mishmash of sonic madness. While the lads only began streaming music this year (at least according to Spotify), the pair have been entertaining audiences since 2017. Exuding confidence, strength and charm, Ultrasonic Zebras commands the stage with an intoxicating authority; and this comes through in their studio recordings. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Some Kind of Sympathy’.

Taken from their debut EP Surfacing – a “hearty blend of musical influences and genres…” – ‘Some Kind of Sympathy’ is a nostalgic journey to the grunge meets alternative rock sounds of the 90s. Bold, brash and rough, there is a gravelly ruggedness to ‘Some Kind of Sympathy’, particularly when the classic rock crescendo hits in the chorus. Yet, while this is a grimy song hitting you in the face with its gruffness, there is also a soothing flow interwoven in the rock-inspired single. Moreover, the soulfulness of the vocals lies beneath the melodic sting giving you a sense of comfort in the chaotic song.

From the bold guitars and pounding drums to the dulcet vocal execution, ‘Some Kind of Sympathy’ is a multi-dimensional, genre-fluid single. The thing is, just as the melody holds a uniqueness, the lyricism adds depth and profoundness to the track. Looking at the world from various perspectives, Ultrasonic Zebras encourage feelings of acceptance, perseverance and empowerment in their singles. When it comes to ‘Some Kind of Sympathy’, the lads use a story to explore human fragility and vulnerability in an optimistic, resilient way.
