Tyler Elden – Trial By Fire (2022)

If Death Cab For Cutie were to have a child with Biffy Clyro, the chances are it would be Tyler Elden. With only three songs to his name (at least, that’s on Spotify), Elden can be considered a newbie in the music industry; however, this US-based lad has several years of experience performing at notable Philadelphia venues, such as Underground Arts and The Grape Room. Moreover, Tyler Elden is reaching audiences far beyond his North American borders receiving coverage from Brazil’s Indie O’ Clock to the UK’s York Calling. The latest addition to his well-received discography is the single ‘Trial By Fire’.

The third single in his monthly singles collection – a collection to display songs made throughout different sessions that did not end up on an EP – ‘Trial By Fire’ shows a softer, gentler side of Tyler Elden. A harmonic melding of dynamic guitars, drums and Elden’s dulcet tones create a flowing melody in which you can easily lose yourself. Interestingly enough, while the song boasts a cinematic, wistful and slightly whimsical ambience, it also has a bold and sophisticated maturity to the arrangement. For instance, the abrupt pauses filled with sharp guitar blasts before flowing off into a charming tune are rather intriguing.

As with his previous work, Tyler Elden is intensely intimate with provocative themes underlying the melody. He explains that ‘Trial By Fire’ touches on “war, a dystopian future, and questioning the struggle to keep fighting when all seems lost.” This is intriguing as the song has a flowing sensation in a soothing sonic package, but there is also a vulnerability in the interesting song. Filled with passion, Elden elegantly exposes human fragility in life with his new single ‘Trial By Fire’.
