twobox. – Life Is Just (So Quiet Without You Here) (2021)

In 2019, UK-based producer Nicholas Langdon decided to share his singer-songwriter talent with the world via twobox. A solo music project, twobox. aims to reach audiences with originality, individuality and authenticity and he hasn’t disappointed. Using a range of styles ranging from indie-rock to synth-pop with some alt-pop undertones, twobox. is breaking boundaries with his genre-defying sound. The latest addition to his evolving discography is the single ‘Life Is Just (So Quiet Without You Here)’.

Following on from his debut EP Kiss Politics (read our review here), ‘Life Is Just (So Quiet Without You Here) uses a more stripped-back sound void of the synth-laden element. Instead of post-punk meets 80s synth-pop production, the new track showcases twobox.’s more vulnerable and sensitive side. Certainly an introspective track touching on issues of isolation, loss and fear, ‘Life Is Just (So Quiet Without You Here) has a sense of melancholic nostalgia to the lyrical and melodic content.

Retaining the Ian Curtis-esque vocals, twobox. adds a gruffness to the track with the throaty vocals. Yet, while the lyrical content has a raw honesty with desperation, it is the vocals that enhance the grittiness of the human soul. Elegantly traversing the barebones melody, twobox. shows a fragility and inner turmoil in a heart-wrenching way.

In basic terms, ‘Life Is Just (So Quiet Without You Here) has a melodic flow, but the genuine desperation behind the vocals evokes an emptiness and sadness in your chest that leaves you gasping for breath.
