Twice Dark – Time Traveller (2025)

With over 30 years of experience in the music industry, from punk bands in high school to indie-rock projects, Josh Kreuzman has a diverse musical background from which he draws a diverse sound. About 28 years after his first dabbling in music, the US-based artist embarked on a journey with his “spectral music project” Twice Dark in 2020. An interweaving of post-punk, industrial, goth-rock, EBM, dark wave, and…well, anything with a hypnotic, ambient neo-gothic tinge, Twice Dark creeps into “decaying industrial spaces…like a phantom reaching out through a fog of time…” (Post-Punk.com). Today, we take our first gander at Twice Dark, so join us as we jump into Kreuzman’s single ‘Time Traveller’.

Following his well-received collaborative remix with The Violet Ghost, ‘Telekinetic the Violet Ghost’, Kreuzman steps into 2025 with Twice Dark’s ‘Time Traveller’. Harkening to the days of The Cure, Pet Shop Boys, and Depeche Mode, ‘Time Traveller’ is a cinematic swirl of synth-driven music. Dragging listeners to vintage 80s/90s post-punk, nostalgic reminiscence binds ‘Time Traveller’; however, a slice of freshness blinks in the rich vocals.

Melodically, the vintage post-punk ‘Time Traveller’ is a testament to the old-school swoon of yesteryear, but it is the theme that adds depth to the track. They say insanity is acting in the same way but expecting different results, and Twice Dark looks at this insanity with ‘Time Traveller’ explaining:

“’Time Traveller’ is a goth-rock/dark-pop anthem about repeating the same mistakes throughout life and knowing that you’ll be back around to this same mistake at some point, soon enough.”

Taking the concept of repeating mistakes in a hazy rush of synth-based music, Twice Dark seems to embody a mind of confusion, frustration, and dark whimsy with his sound –  at least for me. Soothing and calming in mellifluous flow, ‘Time Traveller’ has gentle warmth; however, the cinematic soundscape is knowing a mistake to be had but without a way of changing course. It’s sincere, sentimental and tender but oscillates from darkness to light in a few minutes of music.
