Twice Dark – Necromantic (2025)

Earlier this month, we came across an artist who can only be described as inimitable. With duality flowing in his melodies, Josh Kreuzman draws together elements of punk, indie-rock, dream-pop and metal with a shimmering post-punk allure. Not unconventional, but off-kilter to the extent that the project Twice Dark isn’t pedestrian, his music brims with obscurity and comfortable nostalgia. We began our journey with Twice Dark by listening to ‘Time Traveller’. Join us as we dip into his most recent release, ‘Necromantic’.

Following the well-received ‘Time Traveller’, ‘Necromantic’ continues Twice Dark’s lilt to Depeche Mode; however, the new track offers an industrial edge to the silvery post-punk tinge. Recorded in April 2024 at Indianapolis’ Postal Recording, the track oscillates from brash to breathy in its pulsating beats, hushed vocals and skin-chilling synths – all layered perfectly with sophisticated elegance, as well as a rugged grit beneath the surface.

Inspired by life, ‘Time Traveller’ explores the art of “repeating the same mistakes throughout your life and knowing that you’ll be back around to this same mistake at some point…”; ‘Necromantic’ leans toward the same vulnerability, loss and tragedy but somewhat darker. Melodically, ‘Necromantic’ oozes subdued savageness in a silky whirl of sound – the incorporation of Scott Harris’ vocals clipping with an eerie edge. Twice Dark explains:

“’Necromantic’ is a goth/electro-industrial journey about a man who is pulled to the underworld by an apparition in a graveyard at midnight…. ‘Necromantic’ speaks of lament, loss and unfinished business. ‘Necromantic’ is a grief-soaked goth dance floor anthem. Dance, cry, and enjoy…”

Overall, what is my opinion of Twice Dark and his new song? Creepy from the outset, it’s a hazy fog of perfumed sound ready to ensnare your senses. Yet – this issue of duality constantly arises – there is an ebb and flow between haunting grief and mellifluous solace. Intricately delving into human fragility with the prowess of a gothic post-punk vampire, ‘Necromantic’ is romance laced with black magic and I’m thrilled to fall under its spell.
