TTR Trio – Remove (2021)

TTR Trio are bringing a lot of elements together in their music with ‘Remove’ a shining example of this. The single started out drawing inspiration from trip-hop only to get an infusion of rock and jazz. The elements all come together for a vaguely psychedelic jazz-rock track that is completely different to a lot of other music out there.

This mixing of genres and styles comes from the collective minds of Cristiana Tanzi (vocals, guitar), Kelly Teh (synths, keyboard) and Mark Rudd (drums). Teh wrote the first part of the single before the trio got together to hash out the rest which took an unexpected turn. Exploring rhythms, harmonies and textures, the band moulded the single through engaging conversations and evolving jam sessions.

‘Remove’ swishes to life with twinkling bells tones and an underlayer of experimental sonic textures. There is a wonderful blending of rawness with a polished smoothness woven into the layering of the melody. Trip-hop tones vibrate to life in the depths of the melody while a jazzy guitar floats across your brain. There is a lot going on in the melody and it could so easily all become overwhelming. However, the musicality of the band pulls each thread of music together for an engaging and enthralling soundscape. Each element adds something unique to the sound while complementing other elements and enhancing the overall flow of the music.

While the melody is a masterpiece on its own, combined with Tanzi’s vocals it goes to a whole new level. Her performance has a touch of jazz to it as she beckons you forward with a soulful flow. There is a smoky silken feeling to her voice in the first section of the song. As the song progresses, she adds more power to her performance as it sears through your brain. With the increased power, she infuses pain and heartbreak into each word as she cries out against the instrumentation.

TTR Trio threaten to overwhelm your senses before drawing everything in for a tight yet flowing soundscape capped with powerful vocals in ‘Remove’. The fusion soundscape takes elements from trip-hop, jazz, soul and experimental genres to form an undulating base for the soulful vocals to rest on and enthral you.
