Trummerkind – Beauty Queen (2023)

When we left Trummerkind, they were rattling about our brains with the debut single ‘Revolt’. Fusing fiery hard rock with rambunctious punk in a swirl of post-punk, the UK-based trio were spirited and bold with a sweeping sliver of soothing underlying the melody. In ‘Revolt’ they showcased the profoundness of their songs as a protest anthem, and this thought-provoking nature continued throughout new releases. Today I take a gander at Trummerkind’s latest single ‘Beauty Queen’.

Formed only one year ago, Trummerkind is a relatively new band with a sophisticated charm. ‘Revolt’ was their debut, and I am always concerned that groups may peak too soon leading to a downward spiral; this is not the case with Trummerkind. Matching Robert Silvester’s drums with Oli Sturdy’s guitar and Rowen Silvester’s bass and vocals, the group are growing in their artistry. Following their rock ballad ‘State of the Nation’ and obscure ‘Sukkubus’, Trummerkind showcase their versatility and originality with the theatrical ‘Beauty Queen’.

Often compared to My Chemical Romance, particularly MCR’s Black Parade era, Trummerkind has a gothic intensity in their rock melodies. ‘Beauty Queen’ captures the dramatic theatrics of MCR with a dark dystopian sentimentality. The potential to burst with crashing drums and scorching guitars lingers in the murky pool of sound; however, the intensity of such a ruthless sonic flame oozes through in steady beats, bold guitars and hushed vocals. The consistency of the drumbeats anchors the song but some might find it monotonous despite driving the melody. It is in the complexity of the arrangement that we hear savagery in Rowen Silvester’s whisper and haunting vibes from the instrumentation.

The melody alone can have you feeling chilled with a rising tension in your breast, but it is the narrative that makes ‘Beauty Queen’ intriguing. In its theatrical nature, the trio tell us a tale to express the vulnerable intimacy behind the song. ‘Beauty Queen’ follows a young girl named Star who becomes lost in the world of child pageantry. Pageants might be glitter and sparkling outfits, but the underbelly of success is desperate, ruthless and untamed. Trummerkind explains:

“’Beauty Queen’ is a track that delves into the dark underbelly of the relentless pursuit for success…it delves into the pitfalls of celebrity culture shedding light on the dark corners of drug abuse and body dysmorphia.”
