TROLN – Ghost (2022)

With their single ‘Says Abraham’, TROLN brought an incredibly exciting mixture of devotional praise and murder ballad. They are now turning inward as they look at escaping your inner demons when faced with hardship, through the sounds of ‘Ghost’. Packed with a lot of soul searching, the single considers the journey you take in allowing yourself to feel the warmth of the sun and start truly believing in love and life.

Taking us through dark times and into a hopeful light, the band fuses dark pop with pop-punk, adding a cinematic flair to proceedings. As the introspections of the single tap into the darkest moments of life, there is a feeling of understanding and connection that shines through. Shaking off expectations, the band fills you with the energy to fight against the bitterness and disappointment that leaves you feeling like a ghost.

The journey of ‘Ghost’ starts with the opening that sweeps your feet from beneath you. Instead of letting you fall, the melody catches you and glides through the soundscape. As you move against the smoothness of the first verse, you are surrounded by the press of darkness that is pure dark pop. As you head toward the chorus, new melodic elements make their way into the sound. There is a slightly eerie touch to these new elements that wonderfully plays off the smoothness that covers you like armour. From the first note to the very end, the melody keeps you moving forward through a soundscape of dark times and the negative emotions these situations bring. While the twists of darkness play in the corner of your vision, there is a feeling of moving toward a warm light that will chase them all away. This is taken to new heights by the guitar that comes through the soundscape in the last moments of the track, like a guiding light.

While the melody does a fantastic job of pushing through the darkness toward the light, the vocals add true introspection to the track. There is some beautiful imagery woven into the lyrics that cast you into a desolate and barren world where you feel the sun will never rise. There is an almost Gothic edge to the vocals at times that enhances the overall vibe of the single. You can feel the dark tendrils of negativity grasping at your heels through the performance, only for something brighter to blossom in your chest. This is the energy you need to fight against the darkness and head toward that promised light hinted at in the melody.

TROLN travel through darkness, disappointment and bitterness to fill you with the energy to fight negativity in the introspective ‘Ghost’. There is a lot going on in this single as the melody sweeps you into the soundscape and keeps you heading toward a warm light at the end of a dark tunnel. The vocals bring Gothic vibes and stunning imagery to the track while igniting that spark in your chest that you need to make it through the darkness.
