TROLN – For Love (2023)

Navigating light and dark in a dystopian soundscape, TROLN’s music is beautifully dark and enticing. Compared to the likes of The Cure, PJ Harvey and This Mortal Coil, the Danish quintet by Less Than 1000 Followers as “atmospheric and deep…” with their sound and its lyricism. Known for their metallic beats fused with a melodic post-punk vibe, TROLN finds a delicate line between haziness and brashness in their songs. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘For Love’.

As with their previous single ‘Ghost’, ‘For Love’ takes another look at dealing with inner demons and overcoming challenges in a soul-stirring melody. Yet, unlike ‘Ghost’, ‘For Love’ dips further into human vulnerability with a smokiness to the murder ballad. Soothing and gentle, there is a smooth flow to the instrumentation creating a sense of wistfulness in the melody. Further prompting the wistfulness, Helene Navne’s vocals traipse across the tune as if walking along a misty sonic river. Interestingly enough, while this mystical haze exists through ‘For Love’, the kaleidoscopic organs, guitars and drums bring a bold but mellifluous aggravation at the closing of the track.

Penned as a type of love ballad, ‘For Love’ has an elegant “lose your mind in the emotion” quality; however, the whimsy of the song hides a deeper, more profound theme. Written by Navne, ‘For Love’ is inspired by her “getting to know a woman who left an abusive relationship much like one she was once in herself…” The thing is, while the melody hides a sinister sensibility, it is actually filled with thought-provoking empowerment and acceptance. TROLN explains that “the song is meant as an encouragement for people living in abusive relationships to acknowledge that what they might do for love – forgive, change, submit – might not be love at all.”
