Tristan IV – Someone New (2021)

A lot of people assume that finding love is the solution to all life’s problems. Tristan IV is here to remind us that is not the case and to plea for everyone not to be tricked into finding love as an answer in ‘Someone New’. Using lo-fi and electronic tones, he takes listeners on a journey of self-discovery that pulls at your emotions.

Looking at the intricacies of love and mental health, the single encourages us to find better coping mechanisms. As a debut single, it packs a hefty emotional punch that might just be what you need right now. With a passion for sonic disruption, Tristan moulds an evolving sound around heavy themes.

The opening of ‘Someone New’ is very different to other songs with an almost electronic bird song contrasted with the rapid pulsing of electronic tones. The higher tones give way for a heavy and rather intense electronic soundscape. There is a discordant vibe to the melody that threatens to pull you under the waves of music. The different elements in the soundscape hit against each other in a melodic way that is also slightly off-centre. It all comes together for an intense feeling that pulls you in different directions and makes it harder to determine which way is forward.

The cacophony of sonic elements forms the mindset that has you looking for love as a way to mend it. Against this, Tristan’s vocals call out from the depths with a dual sensation. The primary vocal line is all bass tones that act as a thread of thought that cuts through the melody. The higher vocals are more emotional as they fill you with the pain of the narrative. There is something about those higher vocals that pulls at your emotions and fills you with the heartbreak and pain he is going through.

Tristan IV uses an intense soundscape and layered vocals to depict a mindscape while pulling listeners into a journey of self-discovery in ‘Someone New’. Against the intense backdrop of the melody, Tristan’s vocals remind us not to use love as a fix-all and to take steps to discover who we are before jumping into anything.
